What choice do I have?
Can we just appreciate Bobby’s face in this scene. He’s doing basically NOTHING but telling us so much. His face conveys Rumpel’s deep sadness at how his life has turned out thus far. When he becomes the dark one he says spinning helps him forget but I think for him as a man it’s the opposite. He’s alone with his thoughts and the ghosts of his past.
You’ve got Rumplestiltskin - early, with the limp.
And you’ve got The Dark One - at that point he’s very dangerous.
And then you’ve got Rumple (I call him “Rumple”) after that - who’s so old that he’s sort of lost the bloodlust. He becomes more… he’s not funny, but he can see the humor in situations. He’s so old that he’s seen it all before.
I wanted to make Mr. Gold entirely different from the Rumplestitlskin we see at the beginning of the first season. To make him calm, very much in control. Whereas, on the other side you’ve got Rumplestiltskin, who is crazy, capable of anything. (x)
