The marriage of Elliot and Milah Gold has been falling apart for years. In a
last effort to save the union they agree to have a child, but are forced to
use a surrogate. Enter Belle French, local librarian hoping to put herself
through her senior year of college by carrying a baby for the most feared
couple in Storybrooke.

(NC-17) (yes, this time in earnest). (And: Potential trigger warning) Although I had tremendous fun writing this little fanfic, I’m glad that I’m finally able to sleep again, since, for the last ten days, this here possessed my mind night and day. I may have rushed some parts, and I’m sure, when I’m going to reread it in one or two months, I’m probably gonna cringe at every word, but I wanted to post this raw and fresh and unedited. Also, I’m not good at writing smut, and it’s eternally more awkward if you have to grope around blindly inside your brain for every single word. (But just because I’m not good at it doesn’t mean I don’t like to do it)

Since it’s now finished, you may fill my inbox with prompts for this verse if you like. I’ve never done prompts before, but I’m in a celebratory mood :D

On a slow Wednesday night, Detectives Gold and French eat greasy burgers and greasier French fries at an out-of-the way diner. Gold drinks coffee and French drinks iced tea (laced with far too much sugar and twice as much lemon as is strictly necessary), and they argue over qualifications.

“I’m hardly a rookie, Gold,” French says, popping a fry into her mouth and narrowing her eyes at him. “So I’d appreciate it if you stopped treating me like one.”

“Well I’d appreciate if you stopped acting like you knew absolutely everything about absolutely bloody everything. You’ve got book knowledge crammed into that pretty little head of yours, but there’s more to the game than criminology majors. It’s about intuition. Training. Instinct. And quite frankly, you don’t have what it takes. Not yet.”

Belle hadn’t met her neighbour before his wife walked out on him. Milha was a colourful character so her departure had been, in true form, close to explosive. The house had been quiet and silent after that so she’d assumed that her husband and kid had either moved or gone to spend some time with family.

One day, however, she’d woken up from a lazy Saturday afternoon nap to find a six-year-old kid on her backyard petting her dog, a Viszla called Baron. The kid didn’t seem to wish to talk but was pretty friendly and accepted a glass of milk when she offered some.

Her floofy hair allowed her to recognize him as Bae, Mr Gold’s kid. If Bae was here, then his father hadn’t left the house either.

She’d taken him back immediately, and a very frantic Mr Gold had thanked her profusely. For what she could see from the entrance the house inside was dark and silent and Belle felt, deep in her bones, that she couldn’t just leave and pretend she didn’t see the abject misery in Mr Gold’s eyes, nor the sadness clinging to little Bae.

She invited them over to the park so Bae could play with Baron, and she got the impression Gold only accepted because Bae lit up at the suggestion. Mindful of her neighbour’s limp, the only thing she actually knew about him, Belle set up a blanket on the grass for the grown-ups where they could watch Bae and Baron to their heart’s content. She made chit-chat with Gold for the sake of it, but soon realized that beneath the almost crippling shyness and the daunting self-loathing Nathan Gold was quite an interesting character. Severely depressed, and prone to rather dark thoughts, but iwth a wry sense of humour, a disarmingly coy shyness and a vulnerability about him that drew Belle in.

It became her project, making the Gold boys smile. Bae was easier, he just needed to get out of the house and play. Sometimes she coaxed Nate to take him to the movies, others she asked him to help her walk Baron or bake something.

Nate was ten times harder, but Belle loved a challenge. When he finally stopped mistrusting her and thinking she’d suddenly stop caring about him, which took quite a long while, he became quite attached to her, and it was that bond which allowed Belle to draw Nate back out into the real world. She coaxed him to participate in town activities, to meet some of her friends, to accompany her to try out a new Indian restaurant or some other nonsense and as much as he seemed to enjoy himself Belle always felt, when she saw him smile, that she was getting the better end of the deal.

She strove to encourage his initiative, always asking the same maddening question that reduced him to a stuttering, indecisive mess: “What do you want to do next?” At first he seemed not to know how to answer that but as time went by he started to want to do things and not merely seem like he was humouring her.

Around six months after Bae had decided to get better acquainted with her dog Belle and Nate walked away from the main square, were the Miner’s Day festival was slowly winding down. Bae had stayed, invited to a sleepover at the Tillman house.

“So…” Belle smiled over her cloud of cotton candy. “What do you want to do next?”

She didn’t expect him to gently nudge her up against a wall and press his lips lightly against her own, liking the sugary taste of the candy from her mouth. But, as always, she encouraged his initiative, wrapping her arms around him and sighing softly as his tongue shyly sought out hers.

That afternoon his smile as wide as she’d ever seen it.

Rumbelle are part of a TV Show called “Once Upon a Time” on ABC. Here is the wiki article about the series in general. Belle and Rumplestiltskin are their take on the Beauty and the Beast fairytale. The couple first appeared in Episode 1x12 – Skin Deep.

Belle awoke with a start, and for a moment she didn’t know where she was. Then she heard it again: A shrieking and howling that sent violent chills down her spine and lifted every single hair on her body. She stumbled out of bed and didn’t even bother to put on a dressing gown over her nightshirt. Her toe collided with something in the dark, but her curses were drowned by the sound that had yanked her from sleep. She staggered down the narrow staircase, directing her steps to Ruby’s room, where she knew the noise to come from. She met Mrs. Lucas on the landing in front of her granddaughter’s room, carrying a flickering candle. Her nightcap sat lopsided on her head and the look on her face scared Belle more than the howling sounds that came out of Ruby’s room.
