Exposure

Belle took a deep breath. She could do this. There was no reason to be nervous. This was acting. This was what she had wanted to do ever since she was a little girl. This was a brilliant part in a fantastic new play from a critically acclaimed writer and an award-winning if slave-driving director. Everything about this project was perfect.

Apart from the fact that she would have to go topless on stage.

In fact, very nearly bottomless on stage as well. In this scene, her character, the headstrong pool hustler Lacey, was discovered sunbathing in the leading man’s garden, wearing the world’s tiniest thong and nothing else.

Belle was irritated after her visit to her father, and pushed the stroller home with more energy than the hot weather warranted. As a result she was breathless and red-cheeked, but Gold was there to help her carry the stroller up the steps and inside the house.

“Thanks,” she said breathlessly. “I shouldn’t have walked so fast in this heat.”

“Take a shower, if you like,” he said. “I’ll make Gideon’s dinner.”

He seemed oddly closed off, even more so than usual, his mouth set in a grim line and his eyes not quite meeting hers, silvery hair glinting in the light. She decided that she didn’t want to know why. Perhaps someone at the diner had said something unpleasant after she and Gideon had left. Although if so, she was surprised they had said it within his earshot.

Belle French-Stone’s already dismal life took a dramatic turn for the worse in the bathroom of Granny’s Diner at 8:20 AM as she took her first break of the day.

She bit her lip, knowing she’d chewed the tender flesh raw that morning with her worrying. She had bigger problems at the moment though, sat on the lid of the toilet in a cramped stall and watching her life change completely in the blink of an eye.

She stared down at the stick, stark white against the red fabric of her uniform skirt. Two faint lines had formed in the little window and she let out a shuddering gasp, covering her mouth with a hand to trap the sound.

She imagined this was the type of moment where most women found themselves ecstatic, overwhelmed with the joy of the new life forming within them before succumbing to the usual worries of impending motherhood. Belle felt no rush of joy, just an overwhelming sense of dread.

“Belle?” came a voice from outside the stall. “Honey is everything okay in there?”

“Just fine, Ruby,” she said, swiping at the tears that had started to fall unbidden. She didn’t have time for this. Her break was only ten minutes and she had tables to get to. God knows she needed the money now.

An Unexpected Discovery

Belle couldn’t quite believe what she was seeing. She had been walking this route through the forest to gather fruits and mushrooms for years, and she had never seen a sight quite like this one.

Her route took her past a waterfall and the cool lake that it fed into. It was a lake that she had often swum in with her mother before she had sadly passed. Her mother was of the opinion that every girl, whether peasant or noble, should know how to swim, and the lake had always held a special place in Belle’s heart. She’d never seen another soul in the vicinity of the lake, until today.

There was a man under the waterfall. A naked man.
